CULTURE SHOCK – Normalizing Discomfort in Times of Change – Rene Henry
We are excited to invite you to a great learning opportunity! This interactive session will use storytelling and discussion to help demystify the concept of culture shock and how it can apply to more than just international travel. Participants will talk about the process of adjusting and adapting to new settings and cultures, learning ways to cope with the discomfort that often comes in times of change.
René will share personal, often embarrassing stories about language and cultural mishaps to illustrate her own experiences with culture shock and the many emotions of finding her way in a new environment.

Why Attend?
In one interview, David French, the translator of Sapkowski’s books, said:
“[…] to become a literary translator, one must write very well in their own language. What reaches the readers are not the original words of the author of the book. Every word that the readers see is the translator’s word. So, one must love words.”
What does it mean to love words? How does a love of words translate into a very good translation? Does knowledge of Polish have to match the knowledge of one’s native language? Is the relationship with the author of the Witcher series, Andrzej Sapkowski, important for the quality of the translation?
